Why Candles Hold a Special Place in Mexican Culture

Why Candles Hold a Special Place in Mexican Culture

When people ask me why I started a candle company, the answer usually surprises them.

It wasn't because I was obsessed with candles.

It was because I started noticing how often candles showed up throughout my life.

Growing up Mexican in Los Angeles, candles were always there. They weren't the center of attention, but somehow they were always present during the moments that mattered most.

I remember seeing candles during many family gatherings, birthdays, church services, celebrations, and moments of remembrance. Whether it was a happy occasion or a difficult one, there always seemed to be a candle somewhere nearby.

As I got older, I started realizing that candles weren't really about the flame itself.

They were about what the flame represented.

Presence.

Hope.

Reflection.

Connection.

Over the years, I began noticing something else. Certain scents could instantly bring back memories I hadn't thought about in years. A fragrance could remind me of a family member, a place, or a moment in time. Sometimes all it took was a familiar scent to transport me back to a specific chapter of my life.

That idea stayed with me.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that some of our strongest memories are tied to scent.

A smell can make you remember where you came from.

It can remind you of someone you love.

It can bring comfort when life feels chaotic.

It can help you slow down and simply be present.

That's what eventually became La Candelita.

I didn't set out to create just another candle brand. I wanted to create something that felt familiar. Something that honored the role candles have played in our culture while creating new traditions for our own homes and families.

Every candle in our collection was inspired by a feeling.

A memory.

A purpose.

A moment.

Some are designed to bring peace. Some are meant to encourage reflection. Others celebrate love, strength, growth, or connection.

But they all come back to the same idea:

A candle has the power to transform an ordinary moment into something meaningful.

Today, life moves fast. Most of us spend our days rushing from one responsibility to the next. We rarely stop long enough to appreciate where we are or who we're with.

Lighting a candle won't solve every problem.

But it can remind us to slow down.

To be present.

To reflect.

To reconnect.

For me, that's what candles have always represented.

And that's the reason La Candelita exists.
